You ate carefully, you moved — and the scale is up a kilo this morning. That is not a setback. It is noise. Here is what is actually happening, and why you should watch the trend line, not today’s number.

A kilo overnight is not a kilo of fat
One kilogram of body fat stores roughly 7,000 calories. To gain it overnight you would have had to eat 7,000 calories on top of what you burn — practically nobody manages that at a normal dinner. When the scale is up a kilo in the morning, it is almost never new fat. It is water, salt, glycogen and the contents of your gut.
Your body weight is the sum of many things, and most of them change by the hour. Fat is the one part that moves slowly — and it is the exact part that losing weight is about.
What really moves your daily weight
- Salt and water: A salty meal holds water in your tissue. Next morning: plus 0.5–1 kg — pure water, gone again in a day or two.
- Carbs and glycogen: Your body stores carbohydrates as glycogen, and every gram of glycogen binds about 3 grams of water. A high-carb day lifts the scale without adding a single gram of fat.
- Digestion: Whatever you have eaten weighs something until it has left your body again. That is easily a few hundred grams up and down.
- Hormones: Especially across the menstrual cycle, water retention shifts noticeably — several kilos over the week, completely independent of fat.
Taken together, this moves your weight by 1 to 2 kilograms day to day — up and down — even when your body fat is steadily falling over the same period.
Why the single number lies to you
If you weigh yourself daily and take every number at face value, you ride an emotional rollercoaster: a “good” reading lifts you, a “bad” one crushes you — and neither tells you much about your actual progress. Many people give up on exactly one of those random upward spikes, even though the underlying trend has been pointing down for weeks.

A weight trend is a moving average of your daily measurements. Instead of today’s number, it shows you a smoothed line that filters out the daily water noise and makes the real direction visible. A single outlier barely tugs the line; only a genuine change over several days moves it noticeably.

How to weigh yourself properly
- Weigh yourself in the morning, right after getting up and using the bathroom, before eating or drinking.
- Log it every day — including the “bad” ones. Those are what keep the trend honest.
- Look at the trend line, not today’s number. Once a week, ask yourself one thing: is the line heading down?
- Expect plateaus and small rises. Over two to three weeks the direction is what counts, not any single day.
If daily weigh-ins are hard for you, that is fine — weigh in two or three times a week at the same time. All that matters is that you never let a single number decide how your progress is going.

Why did I gain weight overnight even though I barely ate?

How often should I weigh myself?
Ideally daily, in the morning at the same time — not to judge each number, but to give the trend enough data points. If that stresses you out, two or three weigh-ins a week are plenty. What matters is judging the smoothed trend, not the single day.
My weight has been stuck for a week — am I doing something wrong?
A week is too short to judge. Water retention can mask real fat loss for days. Judge the trend over two to three weeks. If the line is genuinely flat over that window, it is time to check your energy deficit.
