Why protein keeps you full the longest
Of the three macronutrients β protein, carbohydrates, fat β protein is the most filling per calorie. It nudges the satiety hormones in your favour and keeps blood sugar steadier, so the craving one or two hours after eating does not show up. In practice that means: eat enough protein and you land in an energy deficit almost on your own β without going hungry.
The reverse is also true: many people who battle constant hunger while dieting are simply eating too little protein and too many fast carbs that fill briefly and then leave cravings behind.
Protein protects your muscle β and your metabolism
When you lose weight, your body never loses only fat β some comes from muscle. You want to minimise that, because muscle burns energy even at rest and keeps your metabolism up. Enough protein (together with a little strength training) signals your body to keep the muscle and take the energy from fat instead.
How much protein do you need?
As a rough guide, in a weight-loss phase around 1.6 to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day makes sense. That sounds like a lot at first β the point is less the exact number than the direction: most people eat far too little, and even a conscious increase brings the satiety effect.
You do not have to calculate this to the gram. A simple gauge is the palm: a palm-sized protein portion at each main meal puts most people in the right ballpark β and it scales automatically with your body size.

- Animal: eggs, chicken, turkey, fish, lean beef, quark/skyr, low-fat curd cheese, cottage cheese.
- Plant: tofu, tempeh, lentils, chickpeas, black beans, edamame, soy yoghurt.
- Handy on the go: a pot of skyr, a hard-boiled egg, a protein shake without much sugar.
How to build protein into your day
- Fix breakfast first: classic breakfasts (bread rolls, cereal, jam) are often protein-poor. Add eggs, skyr or quark β that carries you full until lunch.
- Protein on the plate first: plan every meal around the protein source, then fill up with vegetables and a side.
